Native American Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs: Addressing the Distant Past to Improve the Immediate Future

Native American Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs

Native American Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs are funded through state and federal agencies. While our funding is a rate 85 percent less than our western counterparts, we have enjoyed a greater recovery rate.

The success rate among state treatment programs has been estimated to be one to two percent, while Native counterparts see a three to five percent success rate. Native treatment programs include Native cultural components in addition to the twelve-step program. It is believed these components help Native clients struggling with genetic residuals from boarding school and generations of historical trauma.

Contact your local tribal counsel offices for more information on Native American alcohol and drug treatment programs.
