Are many Democrats “liberal” because they can’t help it?
Tomorrow we head into the midterm elections. I must confess that I usually skip voting in them. This time, however, I plan to vote.
How about you? Will you vote or not? How will you vote?
If you vote for Democrats it could be because you can’t help it. Liberals have a genetic makeup that influences their political views, according to a new study published in the Journal of Politics and reported by the press. Specifically, it’s a gene called DRD4. If you have it, this gene predisposes you to novelty-seeking. If you have an active social life as an adolescent, this meant that you sought out and were receptive to learning about different points of view. This combination—the gene DRD4 and a social life in your youth—is what creates a liberal point of view.
Everyone is a product of genes and experiences. The “liberal gene” leads to liberal behavior only in the right social conditions. If you don’t have the gene, or have it but were a loner, then you’re more likely to vote for conservatives.
Maybe genetics will influence the outcome of tomorrow’s midterm election. But, I think, it will be only one of many influences. The resiliency of our bad economy may overwhelm all else.
Tomorrow, we’ll talk about the possible outcomes of the day’s elections. For today, however, let’s consider the precursor to election outcomes: voting.
Do you plan to vote tomorrow? Why or why not? And, do you think we’ll see a record turnout or it will be the usual ho-hum midterm political bout?
