Are you shopping for the holiday season? What, if anything, do you purchase online?
   

I haven’t done any holiday shopping yet but when I do, most of it will be online. Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor is my retailer of choice for gifts to family and friends around the country.

If you’ve purchased items online in the last 36 days, you’re part of the $16 billion in online sales for the first half of the November-December season, according to statistics compiled by comScore.

 

That’s up 3% from last year during the same period. Thanksgiving Day was up 10% over last year and Black Friday up 11%.
    The week ending December 6th, with sales of $4.6 billion, was better than any week in 2008.

The role of social media is the interesting twist in all this. One in four online purchasers said that social media influenced their behavior, finds comScore. These include consumer-generated product reviews, expert reviews, Facebook fan pages, and word-of-mouth via Twitter.
