Sarah Palin’s keynote speech at the first national Tea Party convention was long on mockery, short on policy specifics.
The line that caught media attention—and mine—was her derisive quip about Obama’s promise of hope, change, and transparency. “How’s that hopey, changey stuff working out for ya?” she asked.
The crowd loved it. It captured the anger aimed at big government, especially big government headed by a black Democrat.
What should be done? How about hanging Democrats?
Hard to believe, but a Tea Party speaker in Asotin County, Washington, called for the hanging of Senator Patty Murray, a ranking Democrat from Washington, according to an article in the Huffington Post. The article quoted the speaker:
“How many of you have watched the movie Lonesome Dove? What happened to Jake when he ran with the wrong crowd? What happened to Jake when he ran with the wrong crowd. He got hung. And that’s what I want to do with Patty Murray.”
I’m not a legal scholar, but I don’t think this qualifies as a real threat. However, it does signify a deep, deep rage in the electorate.
Where does the rage come from? Is it aimed at the right targets? What’s your take on all the “hopey, changey stuff”?
