SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2: Christians around the globe, unite! It’s World Communion Sunday, an event observed by many Christian denominations that encourages oneness of the Christian community. Although many congregations create their own materials for today’s event, sermon and lectionary examples are available through the National Council of Churches website.
World Wide Communion Sunday originated in 1933 at the Shadyside Presbyterian Church, with other Presbyterian churches following suit in 1936. Four years later, the event garnered national attention when the leader of the Federal Council of Churches—now the National Council of Churches—endorsed World Communion Sunday.
