Distractable Society: How about a world’s record in text messaging?

World record for what? That’s what I said when I first heard about this. Turns out there are several world records for text messaging – for number of messages sent, speed of messaging, and even throwing cell phones. (That last one makes sense to me.)
A few years ago, the official Guinness Book record for number of messages sent was 182,689 SMS messages in a single month. 6,000 per day. One message every 14 seconds.
The official record for the fastest text message, held by a Singaporean teenager, is 41.52 seconds. Here’s the message he sent: “The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human.”
A Florida teenager was feted in the news recently for sending over 35,000 text messages in a month. If you can bear it, here’s a video about it.
A mother of four girls, quoted in the latest issue of Metro Parent, related an odd incident: Her daughter and friends, sitting together in a circle, text messaging one another in silence.
